Making or changing a Will is not always at the top of someone's to do list. It can be something that we are always meaning to do but put off for different reasons.

Making or changing a will allows you to plan for your family, friends and the causes you support.

Why Should I leave anything to the WEA

For over a hundred years, the WEA has worked to deliver education programmes to people who have been educationally or socially disadvantaged and the WEA remains the UK's foremost voluntary provider of adult education.

In its early days, the WEA was the only organisation working adults could rely on to provide education suited to their needs. In more recent times, the WEA has focused much of its efforts on developing educational programmes with the most vulnerable and disadvantaged sections of the community: basic literacy and basic numeracy programmes have been central to this work. Other efforts have been directed towards education and training with a social purpose to support and encourage people to take up positions of responsibility in their community.

The WEA's commitment to education with a social purpose has always given its work a distinct character. The WEA believes that society functions best when people of all backgrounds are able to play a full role.

This approach is reflected in the organisation of the WEA itself. The WEA is governed by its voluntary members who are largely recruited from amongst its students. This gives the WEA a democratic structure unique in the field of adult education.

Making a Will is a golden opportunity to assist good causes you have supported during your life time.

How will my money be used?

The WEA's voluntary membership is organised into approximately 650 branches, making the WEA a truly national organisation. Nearly all communities have a local WEA branch and these play a key role in ensuring that the WEA's programmes are of continuing relevance to the communities they serve.

By minimising overheads and relying on voluntary structures, the WEA ensures that its costs are amongst the lowest in adult education. However, for work with disadvantage people, or for work in rural areas costs can still be very high. The WEA is consistently in the fore developing new educational programmes and initiatives and its work is therefore under constant review and is subject to constant change.

Bequests left to the WEA will be spent supporting the whole range of the WEA's work throughout the country.

How much tax will I pay?

Tax liability can actually be reduced by properly organising your affairs and making a Will. Gifts to charities are generally exempt from Inheritance Tax. Importantly, the value of the gift will be subtracted from the value of your estate before the tax liability for the estate is calculated. Charitable bequests can therefore be used to bring the value of your estate within the tax-free limit. It is therefore possible to contribute to a charity whilst reducing the tax burden on your estate.

How can I make a bequest to the WEA?

Sample wording for a residuary bequest

I give, devise and bequeath to the Workers' Educational Association, (Charity Registration No. 1112775) of 70/72 Clifton Street London EC2A 4HB, the whole (or a ___per cent share) of my residuary estate for its general charitable purposes and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or other proper officer shall be sufficient discharge therefore.

Sample wording for a specific bequest.
