Literacy courses are for learners, who may not have studied since leaving school, to brush up their reading and writing skills, for personal development, or perhaps because of changing employment needs. These classes start at Entry 1 beginners and progress to Level 2 which is equivalent to a GCSE English. Learners at Level 1 and above have the opportunity to take the National Literacy Test. These classes also include discussion work to increase confidence in communicating with others.
Numeracy classes are for learners who want to improve their maths skills. Classes start at Entry 1 beginners and progress to Level 2, which is the equivalent of GCSE Maths. Learners at Level 1 and above have the opportunity take the National Numeracy Test. Many classes will include maths for life e.g. budgeting, money management, maths for D.I.Y.
Our classes are delivered at times to suit learners and many courses offer creche provision.

Language, literacy and numeracy classes are available at many community centres, schools and community associations in most London boroughs. Centres will be able to give you general information about classes.

Learning
Learning takes place in groups of between 10-14 learners and learners have an individual learning plan to review and record their progress and achievements. It is possible for all learners to take a nationally recognized qualification. Towards the end of each course learners have advice and guidance support to plan their next step.
Learners have the opportunity to study as part of a group, but also time is given for individuals to work on specific skills.
All courses and exams are free, and materials and resources are provided.
Other information
In some centres there are free crèche facilities for our learners, and it is also possible for learners to apply for financial help with individual childcare arrangements while they study.
We have links with advice and guidance workers who can advise learners about further courses and possible employment routes.

Joining
Joining our classes is easy. Once you have found a centre offering language, literacy or numeracy classes, you can find out more by attending the assessment session which takes place a week before classes start. This way you can discuss the course with a tutor and take a short assessment which will determine if class is at the right level for you. The tutor will also be able to give advice and guidance about possible options if the course is not suitable for you. In larger centres we have ‘Open Days’ where you can drop in and talk to tutors about courses that you might be interested in. It is possible to join a class after the beginning of term, if a space is available.
Once you join a course you will be enrolled and given a full induction and you will be able to have a say in the topics you would like to study. Most classes run between school hours and it is also possible to study in the evenings and at weekends in some venues.
